ASCRS DIGITAL CLINICAL COMMITTEE PRESENTS TWO SYMPOSIA AT THE 2024 ASCRS ANNUAL MEETING or measurements, especially with astigmatism correction. The Veracity allows her to get this information in even less clicks. She noted that IOLMaster TK (Total K) already takes into account posterior cornea, so when you're using Barrett formulas from the website, you have to click anterior K (K1/ K2) and posterior K (PK1/PK2) measurement; you can't just click TK (Total K). Dr. Fram demonstrated how the Veracity system helps her to be more efficient, noting that when using Barrett Integrated Ks, it might take more than 25 clicks to enter the info into the website, but with the Veracity software tech- nology's toric calculator, it only takes three clicks. This is a game-changer, she said. Dr. Melendez said that he practices in one clinic location with office-based surgery, with a staff that includes optome- trists, technicians, and others. This helps speed up the entire cataract process and improve efficiency. With manual workflow, which Dr. Melendez previously used, the technician prints the biometry and topography from the device and manually enters the data into the online calculator; the surgeon then plans the IOL on a paper chart using manual data input; the patient is handed off to the surgery coordinator to put together a chart for sur- gery; paper charts are walked into surgery; and charts are scanned into the EHR post-surgery. With SMARTCataract, biometry is captured on the ARGOS unit (Alcon), and measurements are automatically loaded; the surgeon plans in SMARTCataract and selects the IOL; the surgical coordinator fills in the surgery date to complete the plan; and the surgical plan is viewed on a laptop or tablet in the OR. The most important step in this entire process, Dr. Melendez said, is capturing the high-qual- ity image with the biometer you're using. Dr. Melendez said SMARTCataract is a comprehensive platform that's dynamic, convenient, and powerful. It offers the ability to plan cataract surgery remotely, to plan the day of surgery with repeat biometry, and to have access to all plans for the IOL/formulas at any time on the website. It helps decrease the element of human error by reducing manual entry. Access from any computer allows surgeons to make changes to a surgical plan from anywhere, and it reduces paper transported to the OR, as surgical plans can be filtered and shown by surgery date and surgeon. CATALYS Precision Laser System, Johnson & Johnson Vision Trey Bishop, MD, discussed the CATALYS Precision Laser System (Johnson & Johnson Vision), which he said helps improve outcomes with preoperative connectivity. The CATALYS system seamlessly integrates preopera- tive corneal parameters and iris registration for improved workflow using either the Cassini (Cassini Technologies) or the IOLMaster 700. Workflow is optimized and surgical complexity is reduced. Hence, more patients are treated with premium care, resulting in greater patient satisfaction, according to Dr. Bishop. "As we know, moderate to severe astigmatism is highly prevalent in patients with cataracts," he said. "Unfortunate- ly, limitations of current surgical methods are key barriers to correcting astigmatism." These include inherent inefficien- cies and potential errors with manual transcription, frustra- tions with toric IOL alignment using manual marking, and numerous challenges with intraoperative aberrometry. As a result, many surgeons don't commit to treating astigmatism. One third of patients are not treated at all, and continued from previous page p SMARTCataract offers cloud-based remote surgical planning with access from any device with the option to prepare, review, modify, and approve. Source: Alcon SMARTCataract, Alcon Robert F. Melendez, MD, MBA, discussed SMARTCataract (Alcon), which he called "the next big thing." This connects the entire Alcon Vision Suite. Whether you're at home, in the clinic, or in the OR, you can access this, he said, adding that he can even do lens selections while out of town at a conference using this technology. It is "a cloud-based digital health solution that simplifies surgical planning and increases workflow efficiency." The most important thing is the initial capture of data with the biometer. This works with many technologies. SMARTCataract is designed to be agnostic, but it's also seamless with the entire Alcon platform. It helps simplify data entry and workflow by pulling patient information into connected devices and eliminates manual data entry points, Dr. Melendez said. It offers cloud-based remote planning with access any- where from any device with the option to prepare, review, modify, and approve. It streamlines surgical planning by transferring measurements into the surgical planner and with automated calculations and IOL selections.
